Laguna Phuket Launches Young Sea Turtles on Ocean Odysseys
More than 70 young sea turtles were released into the sunset waters of the Andaman Sea to begin their lifetime ocean odysseys at Laguna Phuket’s annual sea turtle release on Thursday, 8 March on the Angsana Laguna Phuket beachfront.
The beach ceremony was part of Laguna Phuket’s on-going environmental partnership with Phuket Marine Biological Centre and the 3rd Area Naval Command, Royal Thai Navy to help the plight of endangered sea turtles.
Ticket sales for turtle releases and proceeds of other activities, including turtle cake decorating and a giant raffle, at the event will be put towards the rebuild the Centre’s disabled turtle habitat roof and food for the Navy’s turtle nurseries.
The roof rebuilding project is particularly important to provide the disabled turtles with protection from the sun and stop the turtle’s water from becoming too hot.
Yesterday was the 18th Laguna Sea Turtle Release Ceremony in the on-going turtle conservation programme. Two additional turtles equipped with satellite tracking devices were released for research being conducted by the Centre.
Green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) can live for up to 60 years and spend their lives roaming the world’s oceans. Only the females ever come ashore again to nest.
