The Race of Legends Will See a League of Legends This Sunday
20th Laguna ChriPhuket Triathlon Has the Best Pro Lineup in Many Years
Challenge Laguna Phuket’s Tri-Fest carnival, which will see thousands of international athletes from around the world descend on the island for the legendary Laguna Phuket Triathlon (LPT) on 24 November celebrating its 20th anniversary this year by launching an inaugural Challenge Laguna Phuket a week later on 1 December, was previewed today (Saturday, 23 November) for media by organizers, sponsors, and pro athletes in a special conference at Laguna Grove, Laguna Phuket.
The multi-media event showcased some of the elite triathlon stars set to compete in both races and thrill spectators who each year throng to see the action in the spectacular swim, bike and run courses in and around Laguna Phuket.
This year’s Laguna Phuket Triathlon field is headed by Ruedi Wild and Radka Vodickova, last year’s champions in men’s and women’s field, who signed up to defend their titles. Last year, Wild of Switzerland made his debut at LPT and snatched the title from a top-class field of fellow pros while Vodickova of the Czech Republic, triumphed with her third Laguna Phuket title.
The Race of Legends will also see the hottest names in international triathlon – Challenge Family ambassador Australia’s Chris “Macca” McCormack, four-time World Champion acclaimed as one of the most successful athletes in triathlon history and leading the women’s field also from Australia, Melissa Hauschildt, newly-crowned 2013 ITU Long distance World Championship and 2013 Ironman 70.3 World Champion. Melissa is also defending her champion title from last year’s half iron distance race at Laguna Phuket.
Triathlon legend Australia’s Belinda Granger, the crowd favorite who’s completing her 11th edition of LPT this year, has signed up for both Laguna Phuket Triathlon and Challenge Laguna Phuket making the Tri-Fest much more exciting for the fellow pros and the crowd both.
Pros to watch also include Australia’s Pete “PJ” Jacobs, Italy’s Massimo Cigana and Alberto Casadei with many others to conclude the best pro line up in many years.
The Pre-Race conference was addressed by official sponsors Ms. Wannaprapa Sooksomboon, Assistant Director Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Phuket; Mr. Kittisak Pinmuang, District Sales Manager - Phuket, Thai Airways International PLC (TG); and title sponsor Mr. Ravi Chandran, Director, Laguna Resorts & Hotels PLC.
The Tri-Fest will once again raise money for Laguna Phuket Foundation’s local charitable causes.
“Athletes from Thailand and all over the world have raised millions of Baht to fund various charitable programmes through Laguna Phuket series of sports events,” said Ravi Chandran, Director of Laguna Resorts & Hotels PLC “throughout our Tri-Fest, we are aiming to raise THB 500,000 for the Foundation.”
At the time of press conference, 20th Laguna Phuket Triathlon has around 1,200 entries totaling approximately 1,800 athletes signed up for the entire Challenge Laguna Phuket Tri-Fest.
